this newly compiled double-cassette looks and sound great, and comes highly recommended.

co-released by perverse homage and hatework, this compilation brings together a host of stellar artists for a sonically and aesthetically cohesive side of furious black metal.

a few of these artists were new to me, but everything here is great and this easily stands up as one of the finest compilations I've heard all year.

somehow, copies are still available from perverse homage...so grab one quickly and don't miss out.

obviously this is long sold out, but don't spend ridiculous amounts of money on discogs to get a copy...just enjoy the music.

forbidden citadel of spirits is a raw, lo-fi australian black metal band with ties to carved cross, blackline, drowning the light, and more.

released recently by skjold, this double lp collects split material from 2007 - 2013.

I love all of this stuff, and while metal archives lists them as active, forbidden citadel of spirits haven't released anything new in four years now...really hoping that gets remedied soon.

as with all skjold releases, this one was gone instantly...I managed to get a copy from analog worship, and I know their copies sold out in a matter of minutes, too...

and skjold doesn't have a newsletter, makes no announcements about on sale dates or times, and does a great job of making releases difficult to obtain...

but I guess that's a nice challenge?

regardless of scarcity, this compilation is great and comes highly recommended.

new skjold releases from unholy vampyric slaughter sect and sanguine relic are coming sometime this summer, so keep an eye on the storefront.

(watch out for skjold.)

the 100th release from zen's strange rules label.

can't believe he's finally hit triple digits.

this compilation represents the full scope of zen's releasing efforts - field recordings, harsh drones, noise, and a whole lot of ghostly, ominous melodies woven throughout.

very ghostly...that's the first adjective that came to mind but it really holds true. whenever I listen to any of zen's releases, I feel the sound calling out for visual accompaniment...and while I've made visuals to some of zen's music before, one clip isn't doesn't do the label justice.

maybe one day...

copies are sold out from the source but one is available on discogs.

don't miss this crowning achievement from one of the best, most consistent labels around.

honestly, I don't know how many more platitudes I can bestow upon total black...there's not much left to say at this point.

there's a wide range of artists and styles featured on this release, and the packaging is great, as expected...very clean and minimal, which I always enjoy.

brett's in the process of moving right now, so the total black store is down for the time being...if you can't wait, a copy or two are available on discogs, but of course I'd rather you all order straight from the source.

regardless of how you're able to obtain this one, it's excellent and comes highly recommended.

courtesy of v. sinclair's clandestine compositions label.

solid juxtaposition of ambient drones and noise.

that "post industrial bliss" line on the cover is a perfect description.

the packaging is first-rate - there's some nice vellum paper, the cassettes are labeled, and everything fits together just right.

I don't think I'd heard of any of these artists before, but the label's never steered me wrong before, even with only a handful of releases, and this one is no different.

glad I picked this one up.

vaguely melodic drones are on full display here in the second compilation from strange rules.

it's all very soothing and ambient, perfect for clearing your head after the usual brutality we all listen to.

and it'll be summer soon (hopefully) and this is perfect for warm, carefree summer evenings.

4. Order Of Nine Angels - The Head Which Is Not A Head, Is The Face Of The Deep

the first compilation from total black is finally upon on, the title of which matches brett's new zine that's available via unseen force.

three of these four artists have already released material on what is easily one of the most consistently excellent labels around. sorry if it gets old, but brett and total black just can't be beat. he's one of the best curators around and this is yet another example of that elusive combination: a perfect ear for sound and a perfect eye for design.

I don't really have much more to say - these artists should be familiar to all of you, so checking this out should be a no-brainer.

it's already sold out from the label, so keep an eye on distros and discogs. as with all total black releases, this one is essential.

5. Covered In Sand - Soho Leanings
6. Ahlzagailzehguh - Fiscal Fist (Battering Pattern Mix)
7. Terrorism - Scorched Earth Coalition
8. Exploring Jezebel - Thailandese Small Cock

this glorious new compilation first became available last night at the prurient/clay rendering/lussuria/dual action show at home sweet home that paid tribute to the late euronymous of mayhem fame.

p.m. tremblay of akitsa (and many others) served as the DJ for the evening (best between-set songs I've ever heard, by the way) of sounds that ranged from warm and soothing to as harsh and chaotic as it gets.

every set was great, but prurient had a lot to live up to after his performance at saint vitus a few months ago. but I knew he wouldn't disappoint - he tore through a half-hour of material in as brutal and beautiful a manner as one can.

it was a great night of music at a venue my girlfriend and I hadn't been to previously - a welcome change of pace from seeing almost all shows at either saint vitus or the acheron. I love those venues, but sometimes it's good to mix things up.

anyway, I was on a mission to grab a copy of this compilation and that I did. the artists roster isn't quite as varied as I had hoped, but the material here is, as always, excellent and it ends on a very ambient, experimental note with fernow's exploring jezebel track.

I'm not sure when, where, or even if this will be available elsewhere, so do what you can to track it down...although it will probably be available at the next couple of shows, as will another new compilation, a new exploring jezebel release, and two new geography of hell tapes...so yeah, I'm a little jealous of those of you in chicago and grand rapids....so if someone out there wants to grab me any of those, it would be much appreciated.

7. Plague Mother - My Hands Are Open
8. Caustic Qualm - Assessed And Undiagnosed
9. Deterge - Robbers Cave
10. RVH - Sleeping Civilisations

finally, the first compilation from zen zsigo's strange rules.

this might not stay up for long, so get it while you can...copies are inexplicably still available, so don't wait - grab one from the link below right now, don't even bother reading the rest of this post. you might recognize a couple artists up there whose work I've shared before, and there are several others whose material I've always wanted to share.

there was also a special edition released that included some extra artwork and a t-shirt...long gone, obviously. sure, strange rules is in the united kingdom, and shipping to the united states isn't cheap...but everything zen releases is absolutely first rate in terms of audio content and physical packaging, so it's more than worth it...but I'm sure most of you already know that.

but those of you who haven't heard of the label or made a purchase are missing out in a serious way. zen's work as cremation lily has produced one of the most consistently excellent discographies in modern power electronics and his curatorial skills (as evidenced by this compilation and his other strange rules releases) are unparalleled.

do your best to support him and his efforts, as well as the efforts of the other fantastic artists collected on this release.

bleak environment is back. what more needs to be said?

I've shared a couple of their releases in the past and was definitely disappointed when it was announced that they'd be shuttering operations for the foreseeable future.

but about three weeks ago, a slew of new releases went up, including this, bleak environment's first compilation.

and I'm proud to be able to share it with all of you.

spread across two cassettes packaged in a white clamshell case with the trademark black-and-white photocopied artwork, there couldn't be a better mission statement for the relaunch of this impeccable label than this exemplary compilation of new artists.

of course, the fifty copies sold out in a matter of hours.

tracks range from noisy techno to noisy black metal to just plain old noise and I highly recommend everything on here - do what you can to track down a copy. trust me, you won't regret it.

in addition to new releases from xothist, tollund men, and others, there's also a slew of records and tapes from all of the best labels across the underground. so if you weren't lucky enough to grab one of the 50 copies of eden in reeds, at least pick up a distro item to show your support for bleak environment's relaunch.

and one of the relaunch releases, "vessels of wrath" by leopard in a tree, is still available. buy it now.

14. Acualli - Rites Of Mockery
15. Arizmenda - Rites Of Deconsecration
16. Axeman - Ride Into The Night

ever since the tour edition of this epic compilation came out last year, there's been a rip floating around. I don't know if it was the poor dub job or the fact that the ripper's cassette deck (probably) sucks, but that rip sounds like garbage.

this is a rip of the newly-released pro-tape version and, to be frank, it's a massive improvement over what's already out there. you shouldn't have to rip something multiple times, you shouldn't have to do any editing or use any filters. this rip, as with all of my others, is straight off the deck, no tweaks, no attempts at "improving" the sound quality. and you know what? this sounds pretty fantastic.

so, finally, justice has been done to crepusculo negro's crowning achievement. at nearly two hours, this is a lot to digest. this version comes in a clear plastic case with the same twenty-page, black and white booklet as the previous version. it's got lyrics and imagery that compliment the music perfectly.

overall it's a very well-curated release and easily ranks up there with the masterwork that was the svn okklt compilation as one of the best I've heard in a long time.

it's sold out from the source, but maybe they'll do a second pressing soon. and I hear that people are actually receiving orders in a timely manner nowadays, so don't be too afraid that your money will disappear into a black hole.

Various Artists  - Frozen In Time: Music To Accompany The Films Of Ingmar Bergman

2. Fear Konstruktor - Walls Of The Mind
3. Swamp Horse - Reflections Of A Life Wasted
4. Terence Hannum - I Dreamed That I Was Sleeping
5. Terence Hannum - I Dreamed That I Was Dreaming
6. Ryan Unks - Untitled
7. King Dude - Untitled

from the moment I heard about this release, I thought it must have been created solely with me and my blog in mind. obviously that isn't the case, but I knew I'd have to share it with all of you nonetheless.

this compilation comes courtesy of black horizons, a label specializing in the noisier side of dark ambient. musically and aesthetically, this whole package is absolutely first-rate - the booklet is absolutely beautiful, the music is dark perfection, and it all coalesces in a way that few releases could even dream of.

but the most special aspect of this release is that each side doubles as a score to twenty minutes of a separate ingmar bergman film. and since my love for bergman's work is well-documented, if that isn't right up my alley, well, I don't know what is. included in the liner notes are the the times at which to begin these secondary scores and I highly suggest you all give at least a couple of them a shot.

and even if you have no desire to ever sync any of these tapes up with their respective films, the music and packaging themselves are more than worth the price. terrence hannum is a member of locrian, swamp horse released a tape on handmade birds a couple of years ago, and persistence in mourning were also featured on the séance compilation from worthless recordings that I posted back in february.

easily one of the most thought-provoking and beautifully designed releases of the year, this one deserves a place in every metallic imagery reader's collection.

10. Draupner - Veins Forsaken
11. Prhorxnyox - Satanic Warcult
12. Vissen Pind - Jeg Er Bange For Folk Med Store Næser

yeah, that's quite the tracklist....probably the longest (and filthiest) I've actually written out on here. and the music contained within is just as filthy and grimy as those band names and song titles would lead you to believe.

released just a few months ago by silver key records and phlegm productions, this tape compiles some of the most raw, depraved, and brutal acts in the danish underground.

I picked it up simply for the tracks from luciation and nastran, both of whom have multiple releases on posh isolation, but there's a ton of quality material here from other bands I'd previously never knew existed.

the music on here ranges from black metal to noise to death metal, not to mention combinations of all three, so I'm sure you'll all find something here to enjoy. the recording quality varies wildly from track to track, but I think it adds a kind of an "old-school mixtape" feeling that's missing from a lot of compilations today.

stop by analog worship via the link below to pick up your own copy and definitely be on the lookout for other tapes by silver key and phlegm productions. discogs is probably your best bet, as most releases are already sold out from the labels themselves.

2. Damien Dubrovnik - Women Of The History
3. Lust For Youth - I'm Down
4. Lust For Youth - Tied Hands
5. Lust For Youth - Rose Keller
6. Blodvite - Främlingen

first released on cassette by posh isolation, this is the vinyl version of "the copper roof houses," courtesy of järtecknet. originally compiled and sold for a european tour, this album features some of posh isolation's most high-profile artists.

ranging from the ambient noise of damien dubrovnik to the synth-based darkwave of lust for youth to the tape manipulations of blodvite, this might sound like a very disparate compilation, but listening to it, everything fits together perfectly. just like every other posh isolation (and järtecknet) compilation, the tracks are sequenced perfectly and there's just a very unified feel to the whole record. it's all very dark, discordant, and distant. not to mention deeply satisfying.

so if you've enjoyed anything on posh isolation or järtecknet, don't hesitate to pick this up on vinyl or cassette. there's one copy of the cassette on discogs right now, and the vinyl seems to be available both on discogs and in a couple online distros...and, of course, mount analog.

9. Lussuria - Fox With The Eyes And Ears Burned Out
10. Prurient - Tormented With Fire
11. Vatican Shadow - The Triumph Of Religion
12. Vatican Shadow - Conspiratorial Whispers

ah, the things I go through to get music for free. this was not an easy one to obtain and it involved the use of many audio-manipulating programs. I didn't do any of this because I'm cheap...I did it to prove that I could.

so here it is, a fantastic hospital productions compilation from late 2010, "around the dragon's broken neck hangs the medal of saint lazarus." what a mouthful. nevertheless, one look at the tracklist should let you know how great this is - alberich, contrepoison, FFH, lussuria, prurient, vatican shadow - you can't go wrong with a lineup like that.

I'm not even going to bother describing any of the tracks - just download it and hear for yourselves. legitimate digital versions are available on itunes and amazon, and there's one copy for sale as of this writing on discogs, but it's going for a pretty penny.

sample here and then decide if it's worth it...oh, who am I kidding, of course it is.

mount analog is a never-ending source of great finds. I was able to snap up this epic noise compilation for only a third of what it goes for on discogs. this triple c60 was released in 2010 by chondritic sound and is limited to just three hundred copies.

featuring well-known artists such as skin graft, prurient, redrot, and hive mind, this doesn't quite have the variety of port out, starboard home or white eye of winter watching, but it's nevertheless an excellent document of a then-fledgling label staking it's claim in the noise genre.

packaged in a vinyl triple cassette case with three double-sided inserts, this compilation both looks and sounds great. the artwork is all black and white with extremely heavy contrast, and utilizes the same collage technique as most other chondritic sound releases.

sonically, there's not a huge range here - it's mostly harsh noise wall with occasional excursions into droning ambience and wild power electronics - but it's still a satisfying (albeit grueling) listen, and isn't that what really matters?

there are a few copies available on discogs, and I think there's one copy available at vacation vinyl in los angeles.

definitely worth a look, especially if you've been digging chondritic sound's latest string of stellar releases, all of which are available to stream and purchase on their bandcamp page. they all feature excellent packaging, spray-painted cassettes and cutting-edge music, so if you're not already familiar with the label, rectify that immediately.

let's take a break from bandcamp roundups to gaze (and listen) in wonder at this amazing compilation from worthless recordings. I first heard about the epic double cassette via demian johnston's fantastic devd formats blog, where he gave it an absolutely stellar review.

available straight from the label for only $10 including shipping (to the US, at least), this is some of the best bang-for-your-buck around right now. not only is the packaging fantastic - two clear tapes with silver liners and stickers come in a double, brick-style norelco case - but these two cassettes also house some of the best harsh noise and power electronics around. luminaries such as vomir, demonologists, and winters in osaka all make an appearance, and there's even a funeral doom track from persistence in mourning thrown in at the end for good measure.

there's close to two hours of brutal harsh noise and anxiety-ridden ambience spread across these two tapes and I can't recommend this release highly enough. in fact, everything from worthless is going to be worth your dollars - they've got other releases from HHL, vomir, burial ground, and bad algorithm, plus, they've put the audio from two of my favorite films of all-time - naked lunch and twin peaks: fire walk with me - onto audio cassettes for your casual listening pleasure. only naked lunch is still available, though, so grab it while you can.

and snap up those other releases, too.
