order of darkness - ruins of mysticism and plague.

Order Of Darkness - Ruins Of Mysticism And Plague

12:55

25.72 MB

1. Esoteric Sorcery
2. Monolith Of Sacrifice

new demo from order of darkness courtesy of perverse homage.

two tracks of unforgiving audio.

all tapes are hand-numbered and dedicated to the owner.

check out their previous release here.

really solid stuff, looking forward to hearing more from this project in the future.

MBD - incorruptible.

MBD - Incorruptible

9:48

19.57 MB

1. Glorious Sanctity!
2. The Men And Women Who Do Not Fear Entropy

short but sweet new release from MBD via fusty cunt.

described by the label as, "power electronics based around christian, buddhist and hindu corpse worship," there's a ton of atmosphere and texture here.

be sure to pick up this and all of the other releases from fusty cunt ASAP...they always go fast.

(for sanctimonious purposes only)

funeral altar / ghaisiuan II.

Funeral Altar / Ghaisiuan II

28:34

55.64 MB

1. Ghaisiuan - Untitled
2. Funeral Altar - Untitled
3. Funeral Altar - Untitled

newest split from the two perverse homage staples.

the funeral altar side sounds great, as expected...these tracks really build on what was started in the full-length and they're first-rate.

as stated when it went on sale, the ghaisiuan side was recorded on a broken machine and sounds rough...not that I have an inherent problem with that.

in fact, I think it's an interesting experiment in sound...it adds an almost generative element, where even the artist doesn't know how the final outcome will sound until it's finished.

the resulting track is very noisy, very raw...it sounds like the guitar and some vocal elements are present, but everything else is in the process of being engulfed by a black hole...probably not what most of you were hoping for, but it adds a new layer to this release, which would've otherwise just been a standard (albeit excellent) split...it makes it into experimental sound art, a generative exercise in unintended manipulations...to my ears, at least.

definitely check it out.

vanatur - landscapes of khor virap.

Vanatur - Landscapes Of Khor Virap

18:16

35.53 MB

1. The Rites Of Pagan Children
2. Reborn Blood Oaths

hot off the presses from the latest perverse homage update, here's the debut (as far as I can tell) from armenian black metal horde vanatur.

only two tracks, but they're substantial and really great.

plenty of riffs, ghostly shrieks, and a surprisingly audible recording make for a really excellent release.

highly recommended.

more from the latest batch coming soon...

digitally ascendant.

"Digitally Ascendant"

created as part of "Identity 0.0," curated by Leo Kuelbs and Aaron Riedel

as some of you may know, I've spend spring and summer of this year working on a new commissioned video for a curated show focused on the fluid nature of identity in the 21st century.

the concept was first mentioned to me almost a year ago, and in january of this year I started testing out visual concepts and brainstorming story ideas, but it wasn't until may that the pieces finally started to fall into place.

this video was a challenge...like so many of my past works, I wanted to incorporate narrative text, but there were two obstacles: first, I didn't want the viewer's ability to read to the text to interfere with the viewer's ability to understand the video. second, I wanted the text itself to be interesting to look at, even if the viewer isn't interested in reading it.

unlike a lot of artists and filmmakers I know, I love have constraints placed upon the work I'm trying to create. those obstacles guide me and force me to think in new ways.

because music is so integral to all of my work (and my daily life in general), I had to find a sound artist who aligned with my aesthetic and could create both ambient atmospherics and crushing power electronics. I've been a massive theologian fan ever since the further I get from your star..., and was thrilled when lee agreed to be a part of this project.

and that's when the concept finally came together.

imagine a world, post-singularity, in which mankind exists in a solely digital state. one machine (played by my lovely girlfriend) is responsible for maintaining those digital lives, and as that machine is flooded with requests for identity changes, it slowly begins to malfunction until it has no choice but to reset itself.

the story is told through written text that was designed and laid out by jorden haley, who also created the sacred geometry-esque patterns that turn and rotate like cogs in an ancient machine.

lee and jorden were (and are) fantastic collaborators, and it was their hard work that took my initial idea and visuals to a new place.

from the outset, it was important to visualize the shift from a physical reality into a digital one. after much trial and error, and a lot of youtube tutorials, I found a method that allowed me transform two-dimensional video footage into three-dimensional particles that could be distorted and manipulated on a z-axis. maintaining particle definition with an h.264 codec was also a little challenging, but a few dozen exports later, I managed to get the settings just right.

on the audio side, I think lee sent me about a dozen different tracks, and I pieced together the final mix myself. the score is currently available to stream and purchase on lee's bandcamp.

to make things even more challenging for myself, I created special versions for the media center's 5760x1080 video wall and 9024x800 360-degree projection. so come on out to the opening reception to check out my work, as well as all of the other videos in the show, then swing by the manhattan bridge to see it again in a different format.

and don't miss ende tymes...really excited and honored to be a part of such a stellar lineup. my video is showing on sunday, but the entire festival is worth checking out.

buy ende tymes tickets for friday, saturday, or sunday...or get a weekend pass.

60.38 MB

1. Intro
2. Untitled
3. Untitled
4. Untitled
5. Untitled
6. Outro

debut full-length from funeral altar, newly released by perverse homage.

ambient synth-based intro and outro tracks with four slabs of black metal in between.

what more could you want?

a vinyl version might be coming soon, so keep an eye out.

recommended.

sanguine relic - bitter reflection in luminous shadows.

Sanguine Relic - Bitter Reflection In Luminous Shadows

40:34

80.39 MB

1. Untitled
2. Untitled
3. Untitled
4. Untitled
5. Untitled
6. Untitled
7. Untitled

here's the latest sanguine relic release, just received today.

everything released by both the artist and label have been fantastic so far and this is no exception.

sanguine relic have always struck the perfect lo-fi chord, at least for me...harsh and raw, but with unrelenting, memorable riffs that somehow manage to surface despite the grime and decay.

this is exactly what I was hoping for and I'm looking forward to absorbing this as the daylight dissipates and the cold moves in.

long-since sold out on cassette, the vinyl version from skjold disappeared in something like fifteen minutes, as it did every other distro, as well.

keep an eye on discogs, this one comes highly recommended.

(for bitter purposes only.)

akurazbrukk - rehearsal 04/2017

Akurazbrukk - Rehearsal 04/2017

5:38

13.58 MB

1. Untitled
2. Untitled
3. Untitled

super raw (and short) rehearsal tape from akurazbrukk, a new perverse homage entity.

the sound on this one is pretty rough but it's still monstrous.

new perverse homage tapes were just released and have already sold out...ditto for those skjold records.

will be posting those new ones once they're received...

unholy vampyric slaughter sect - canticle bound in spirit - the faith in vampyric blood.

Unholy Vampyric Slaughter Sect - Canticle Bound In Spirit - The Faith In Vampyric Blood

18:29

40.76 MB

1. In The Blood There Is No Quiet
2. The Flesh Is A Tomb I Shall Not Want
3. Drawn From The Rose Pillar
4. And I Shall Come To Thee As An Iron Wolf
5. Follow Me Through Thine Dream Of Dying Orchids
6. Upon My Tears The More She Wept In The Ivory Light Of The Moon

great stuff right here.

fresh from the latest perverse homage batch, this is the longest UVSS tape yet, with a slightly more refined sound and a real sense of purpose.

the ambient portions do exactly what they need to do, and that little hint of melody really pushes it over the edge.

don't misunderstand - that raw brutality is still here in spades, but the variety of sounds really help the more violent sections stand out.

copies should be arriving at analog worship and found remains soon, so keep an eye out.

highest recommendation.

(for unholy purposes only.)

forbidden citadel of spirits - collection II.

Forbidden Citadel Of Spirits - Collection II

1:15:22

138.53 MB

1. Complete Unknown Residual Evilness
2. Possessed Wolves Cast Shadows
3. Manifestation Of Tainted Black Skies
4. Upon The Stone Of Ancient Evil
5. I Am Now Haunted Forever
6. I Spit Blood Upon The Ceiling (Summoning Pendle Hill Witch)
7. The Ultimate Fear Of Ismaelta
8. The Ritualistic Spiral
9. My Goat Thrusts For The Ointment
10. Blackened Skies Transcend Me
11. Moonlight Cast Upon Thy Waters Of Sorrow
12. Absolution Of The Darkest Spell
13. The Unnatural Healing Of The Ancient Beast Demonicam
14. Wolves Have Come To Feast
15. Coffin Of Eternal Dead Spirits
16. The Foul Magick Of Black Blood

forbidden citadel of spirits is a raw, lo-fi australian black metal band with ties to carved cross, blackline, drowning the light, and more.

released recently by skjold, this double lp collects split material from 2007 - 2013.

I love all of this stuff, and while metal archives lists them as active, forbidden citadel of spirits haven't released anything new in four years now...really hoping that gets remedied soon.

as with all skjold releases, this one was gone instantly...I managed to get a copy from analog worship, and I know their copies sold out in a matter of minutes, too...

and skjold doesn't have a newsletter, makes no announcements about on sale dates or times, and does a great job of making releases difficult to obtain...

but I guess that's a nice challenge?

regardless of scarcity, this compilation is great and comes highly recommended.

new skjold releases from unholy vampyric slaughter sect and sanguine relic are coming sometime this summer, so keep an eye on the storefront.

(watch out for skjold.)

lampir - demo II.

Lampir - Demo II

20:52

39.32 MB

1. Intro
2. Lampir Awakening
3. Forgotten Arts Of Penetration
4. Blood Cries To Eternal Sickness

this is the second pressing of the second demo (duh) from lampir, courtesy of perverse homage.

I missed the first pressing while shooting something that I really hope comes to fruition so that I can share it with all of you...but I digress.

straightforward, lo-fi, all of that good stuff we look for in "trve" black metal.

if you enjoyed the first demo, you'll enjoy this one, too.

all of the releases in the latest perverse homage batch were really strong, so I'm eagerly anticipating that next unholy vampiric slaughter sect tape.

sacrilegious crown.

Sacrilegious Crown - S/T

36:16

70.97 MB

1. Eresia I: Revelation
 2.  Eresia II: Apocryphal Ceremony
3. Eresia III: Breathless Chant
4. Eresia IV: Contemplation
5. Eresia V: Purity

self-titled tape from sacrilegious crown, courtesy of perverse homage.

the band's most lengthy release to date, and, in my opinion, the most consistent and cohesive.

long gone, but maybe it'll be reissued.

I didn't get the latest perverse homage newsletter either, but I keep a watchful eye on the facebook page...because if you're even forty-five minutes late, you're probably out of luck.

kind of like how I missed the latest skjold release...

anyway, great stuff on this one.

(for sacrilegious purposes only, again.)

funeral altar / ghaisiuan.

Funeral Altar / Ghaisiuan

17:06

33.39 MB

1. Funeral Altar - Untitled
2. Ghaisiuan - Untitled

new split between funeral altar and ghaisiuan, courtesy of perverse homage.

the funeral altar side is super uptempo, filled with riffs, no-frills black metal.

the ghaisiuan side is very different, much more cacophonous...but their style shouldn't surprise any of you.

will this be reissued?

who knows, but it's really great and if you missed out on grabbing a copy, keep an eye on discogs.

more from this perverse homage batch will be posted soon.

(sold out.)

richard ramirez + nascitari - harsh teachings.

Richard Ramirez + Nascitari - Harsh Teachings

29:17

54.9 MB

1. Lesson 1
2. Lesson 2

new collaborative recording from richard ramirez and nascitari, courtesy one of my favorite labels around, NSN.

incredibly harsh noise, wall-like at times but with a ton of sonic variety.

copies are available on discogs directly from the label.

don't miss it.

(for educational purposes only.)

(a)sex - forced.

(A)Sex - Forced

9:31

18.49 MB

1. Liar
2. Shaking Hands
3. Image Of Perfection
4. Delusional

here's the final tape I picked up in the last fusty cunt batch - richly textured power electronics from my friend mitchell, who also records HNW as the ebony tower.

by turns meditative and destructive, mitchell is a master at composing and juxtaposing harsh sounds to create an emotionally complex journey.

I can't say enough good things about him or his work, so do your best to pick up this release and any of his others that you happen to encounter.

highly recommended.

ventos - a noite cai lentamente.

Ventos - A Noite Cai Lentamente

19:10

38.07 MB

1. Majestosa e Assombrosa
2. A Noite Cai Lentamente
3. Clara Escuridão
4. Em Seus Olhos

brazilian (or maybe portuguese?) black metal from ventos, courtesy of fallow field.

super raw recording, should appeal to lots of you.

this was made available through youth attack a few weeks ago with the rest of the latest fallow field batch and all quickly (and unsurprisingly) sold out.

not exactly groundbreaking, but still solid material that has me interested in hearing more from this project.

(for preview purposes only.)

ghaisiuan - demo v.

Ghaisiuan - Demo V

25:09

47.8 MB

1. I
2. II
3. III
4. IV
5. V

I'm going to philadelphia this weekend to film a bunch of stuff at the inaugural decibel metal and beer festival, so I'll make this quick...

this is the first edition of ghaisiuan's fifth release.

perverse homage released a second edition and that's sold out, too.

if you liked their previous material, or any other perverse homage/defiled light releases, you'll like this.

cory strand + shadowpiercer - a dream of dark and terrible things.

Cory Strand + Shadowpiercer - A Dream Of Dark And Terrible Things

1:19:42

147.99 MB

1. Cory Strand - Everything Is Not Fine
2. Shadowpiercer - Henry's Window Is A Key
3. Cory Strand + Shadowpiercer - Industrial Malaise
4. Cory Strand + Shadowpiercer - Subtle Undertones of Severe Loneliness Throughout

this new release from altar of waste sold out so fast that I didn't manage to pick up a copy...thankfully cory and dakota agreed to let me share the audio here for your enjoyment.

this double-cassette features one track each from cory and dakota, plus two collaborative tracks, all based on david lynch's eraserhead.

as you'd expect from an altar of waste release, the mood of eraserhead is captured perfectly here in all of its dark, industrial, claustrophobic malaise.

I'd tell you all to pick this up immediately but, as I said, it's long gone.

so buy some of their other releases instead.

you'll be glad you did.

unholy vampyric slaughter sect - for the sect.

Unholy Vampyric Slaughter Sect - For The Sect

16:28

31.05 MB

1. Hell Flesh Resigned To Sodomy
2. Corpse Of Angel Submerged In Inferior Blood
3. A Beast Of Ebon Blood
4. Blessed By A Black Sun / Thy Wings Keep My Shade, Thy Strengths Grant Me Hate

most of this collection is readily available elsewhere on the internet, so I'm only sharing the live set.

if anyone really wants my rip of the rest of it for whatever reason, let me know and I can send it....

...and I couldn't find the right place to split that last two tracks, so it's just one big one...sorry for any inconvenience.

courtesy of perverse homage, this is a live recording of a show in brooklyn last year, that I was somehow unaware of...oh well.

not sure if/when we'll get more material from UVSS, but hopefully it's soon.

this is long gone, as is the reissue, so keep an eye on discogs.

highly recommended, but that shouldn't be surprising.

megalith grave - petrified bones & decayed monoliths.

Megalith Grave - Petrified Bones & Decayed Monoliths

18:13

33.38 MB

1. Under A Horned Waning Moon
2. Dungeon Cries Echo Over Saturnine Ruins
3. Perceived Coruscations Of Daemon Light
4. Indelible Marks In Necromantic Subconscious
5. Declension Into Dark Void

somehow I missed the megalith grave release on defiled light, so this has served as my introduction to the band.

perverse homage's description is pretty apt - "piercing guitars and despair ridden vocals" basically covers it.

not digging this as much as the lampir tape (or the unholy vampyric slaughter sect compilation), but that's just me.

it's enjoyable nonetheless and I'm looking forward to more...

(nothing to see here.)

lampir - demo I.

Lampir - Demo I

21:56

40.75 MB

1. Intro
2. Tears Dripping From The Moon's Crescent
3. Every Death I've Known
4. From Their Coffins
5. Ravishing Under A Pale Gleam

a quick google search informed me that lampir is the bosnian word for vampire...so, yeah, fits right in with the perverse homage aesthetic.

part of the newest batch, along with megalith grave and unholy vampyric slaughter sect releases...which I also picked up.

excellent first demo of no-frills, uptempo black metal.

some really great riffs on this one and, as with everything from perverse homage (or defiled light, for that matter), it's highly recommended.

(long gone.)

carved cross - s/t.

Carved Cross - S/T

35:25

66.22 MB

1. Untitled
2. Untitled

amazing stuff right here.

mournful, caustic, bleak, multifaceted black metal from carved cross via overuse.

this one went fast and I doubt it's available anywhere other than discogs but I can't recommend it highly enough, so do everything you can to track it down.

certainly one of the best of the year, probably my favorite carved cross release.

instead of listing additional platitudes, just listen for yourself.

28.33 MB

1. Dim x As Integer Do While x < 5 x = 1 x = x + 1
2. Unsigned Int i; For (i = 1; i! = 0; i++) {/* Loop Code */}

another one from the latest fusty cunt batch.

harsh electronics from deterge, an artist with whom you should all be familiar.

love that album cover, too.

maybe some copies are still available?

(unlikely, but you might as well try.)

1. The Birth Of A Nation
2. Executing The Firstborn Son
3. At War With White Boys
4. When The Last One Leaves

newest koufar release from the newest fusty cunt batch.

scathing power electronics, as expected.

highly recommended, as is everything from this artist and the label.

these tapes are going faster than ever, so be sure to grab anything that piques your interest as soon as possible.

more rips from this batch of tapes coming soon...

4. Presenza II
5. Sussurro III
6. Sussurro IV

here's the second new perverse homage release.

as per the title, this one's a little more "forest-y" with some nice ambient interludes.

more great stuff, as expected.

highly recommended, and be sure to track down the other sacrilegious crown release.

Hand Of Glory / Sanguine Relic

16:20

30.52 MB

1. Hand Of Glory - Illness Perfected
2. Sanguine Relic - Untitled
3. Sanguine Relic - Untitled

third release from perverse homage, the label formed in the wake of defiled light's demise.

similar aesthetic and sonic offerings, which is exactly what we'd all hoped for.

super raw, super lo-fi, and, most importantly, not on bandcamp.

sanguine relic was another top-tier defiled light act and their two contributions to this split don't disappoint.

highly recommended.

already sold out from the label, keep an eye on discogs.

not totally sure how to describe this, especially since I haven't heard any of this band's other work...it's got a very black metal vibe, but it's not black metal...I don't think.

very dark, industrial at times while ambient at others.

released via breathing problem productions, be sure to check out their other releases...lots of great stuff.

2016 comes to a close.

I can't believe that metallic imagery has now been in existence for four years.

sometimes it feels like it's been a lot longer, sometimes a lot shorter...

and while the last three hundred and sixty-five days haven't brought a lot of posts, they have brought a whole lot of personal and professional triumphs.

my girlfriend made a film that's played at a few festivals across the country...it's great and I'm so proud of her.

I've made multiple videos that have played in the united states and europe. I've worked with a whole bunch of musicians whom I really admire.

and we're working on a really awesome webseries that I know a whole lot of you will be into.

all in the continued pursuit of creative and financial freedom.

new music has played an integral role in all of this, it's just a shame that so much of it is readily available online.

and it's also a shame that I don't have nearly as much time nor energy to scour the storefronts of obscure labels and distros hunting for undiscovered gems as I used to...

but metallic imagery has continued, and will continue.

since it's also the end of the year, my list of favorite albums is below.

no subsections, no qualifiers, nothing extraneous - these are just my favorite things that I heard this year, from limited-run tapes to big releases.

streaming links are included as available...

1. sanguine relic - blood on old altars in remembrance.
2. fallujah - dreamless.
3. el-ahrairah - self-titled.
4. oathbreaker - rheia.
5. uškumgallu - rotten limbs in dreams of blood.
6. cobalt - slow forever.
7. marsh dweller - the weight of sunlight.
8. blood incantation - starspawn.
9. bastard of majesty sin - monument of gathered whore bones.
10. chthe'ilist - le dernier crépuscule.
11. wreck and reference - indifferent rivers romance end.
12. katatonia - the fall of hearts.
13. street sects - end position.
14. youth code - commitment to complications.
15. agoraphobic nosebleed - arc.
16. mizmor - yodh.
17. forteresse - thèmes pour la rébellion.
18. orgy of carrion - obscured ceremonies under hell moon.
19. alcest - kodama.
20. 40 watt sun - wider than the sky.
