this new release from the rita comes in some stellar packaging...inserts featuring shark attack photographs and abstract art are paired with torn and blood-spattered women's bathing suit fragments to form a startling and immersive whole.

each side opens with audio of a woman describing a shark attack, followed by very textured yet brittle walls.

I haven't been listening to a ton of HNW lately but sam's work always manages to pull me back in. this one is out of stock from the label but reach out to sam via his blog, he might have a few copies left.

this new release from altar of waste sold out so fast that I didn't manage to pick up a copy...thankfully cory and dakota agreed to let me share the audio here for your enjoyment.

this double-cassette features one track each from cory and dakota, plus two collaborative tracks, all based on david lynch's eraserhead.

as you'd expect from an altar of waste release, the mood of eraserhead is captured perfectly here in all of its dark, industrial, claustrophobic malaise.

I'd tell you all to pick this up immediately but, as I said, it's long gone.

so buy some of their other releases instead.

you'll be glad you did.

as total black's first vinyl release, I couldn't think of anyone or anything more fitting than a new release from the rita.

featuring source recordings taken from ballet dancers' shoes, sam mckinlay has created his most cohesive, hypnotic work yet, and I just love it.

there are so many great textures here, it's great to see his work continue to evolve. mckinlay could've easily grown complacent and chosen to churn out generic wall after generic wall, but he doesn't. there's real care and craftsmanship put into this record and it shows.

the same goes for brett over at total black - he put so much thought and detail into making this record a reality, above and beyond the call of duty. great design and great supplemental materials - posters, full-color booklets, everything here coalesces into the perfect example of why he runs the best noise label around.

so...this is a big one: a twenty-disc box set from richard ramirez's werewolf jerusalem project.

it was not cheap, nor is it easy to get through, as each of these discs could be an album in and of itself.

this collection is dense, almost impenetrably so, but that's probably the point....much like the off-limits city for which it's been named, the journey feels...

dangerous,

perilous,

like trekking through toxic lands,

like breathing poisonous air.

the whole thing was manufactured specifically for the number of pre-orders that were taken, and each set is numbered and signed by ramirez.

I don't know how many are out there, but it can't be much more than ten copies.

so if you have a chance to grab one, don't hesitate.

released about two months ago by the always-reliable urashima, queen sheets finds sam mckinlay manipulating megan miller's recordings taken from her own art installations focused on the duality of nylon.

soft yet strong, nylon has obviously been a preoccupation of mckinlay's for some time, and this collaboration truly takes his sonic art to a new conceptual level.

this double LP is nicely packaged, comes with a bunch of inserts, and is obviously well worth your time and money.

my favorite literary HNW project is back with another crushing, monumental release, this time dedicated to jeffrey eugenides' novel, the virgin suicides.

although not quite as lengthy as the 1Q84 box set, this one clocks in at nearly four and a half hours, so it's not easily digested, either.

but as with all ebony tower releases, it's very meditative and contemplative, with wave after wave of textures that all prove to be incredibly hypnotic.

it's all very cohesive, and there's great packaging as well - but that should be expected from an altar of waste release.

highly recommended - another excellent release from a consistently excellent artist on a consistently excellent label.
