that's right - I don't know most of the track titles for this one.

the label hasn't released the names of the rest of the tracks, they're not listed on this limited tour version of the tape, and a few cursory internet searches didn't reveal anything, so it is what it is...as of now, I've left them untitled, but I'll happily go back in and add them once they're available.

if you've been into the first two arizmenda releases, this one will be familiar territory...that's not necessarily a bad thing, but a little musical growth would be nice...it's still that swirling, chaotic black metal we all know so well.

nevertheless, it's an enjoyable release and I know I need to spend more time with it...these are all just rough first impressions. I'm guessing that this one will reveal more of itself over time, as the band's first two albums did so expertly...just need to give it some time.

the dubbing quality isn't the best, a fact made more apparent when listening with headphones, but it's a solid album that will appeal to fans of the band, the label, and the genre.

this is the "juarez, mexico" pressing of the new volahn album, which to the best of my knowledge has yet to see an official pressing or even digital release, aside from the first two tracks.

I like it quite a bit more than the new arizmenda album, which I'll also post soon...not that the other is bad, there's just a lot more variety here and you can hear some genuine musicianship. the recording quality isn't great, but it's clear enough, so hopefully this rip will tide everyone over until an official digital version comes out.

as I think I've mentioned before, I don't condone the label's actions nor the alleged actions of certain members of the faction, but the music remains something that is worthy of attention. and the fact that I got these tapes at all, let alone surprisingly quickly, definitely bodes well for the future of their operations.

check the crepusculo negro store for copies of this as well as a few other new tapes and splits. believe it or not, I think they're really trying to make amends for their past behavior...

whether or not they're worth forgiving?

that's up to you.

ever since the tour edition of this epic compilation came out last year, there's been a rip floating around. I don't know if it was the poor dub job or the fact that the ripper's cassette deck (probably) sucks, but that rip sounds like garbage.

this is a rip of the newly-released pro-tape version and, to be frank, it's a massive improvement over what's already out there. you shouldn't have to rip something multiple times, you shouldn't have to do any editing or use any filters. this rip, as with all of my others, is straight off the deck, no tweaks, no attempts at "improving" the sound quality. and you know what? this sounds pretty fantastic.

so, finally, justice has been done to crepusculo negro's crowning achievement. at nearly two hours, this is a lot to digest. this version comes in a clear plastic case with the same twenty-page, black and white booklet as the previous version. it's got lyrics and imagery that compliment the music perfectly.

overall it's a very well-curated release and easily ranks up there with the masterwork that was the svn okklt compilation as one of the best I've heard in a long time.

it's sold out from the source, but maybe they'll do a second pressing soon. and I hear that people are actually receiving orders in a timely manner nowadays, so don't be too afraid that your money will disappear into a black hole.

in honor of the fantastic black twilight circle show that went down in los angeles last night, here's the first and only demo from bilirubin. after arizmenda performed, my eardrums were just about destroyed...but it was still a great show filled with tons of atmosphere, energy, and enthusiastic fans.

this demo will definitely appeal to any and all fans of the crepusculo negro and rhinocervs sound - very lo-fi and raucous - and if I didn't know any better, I'd think they were part of the same scene...but according to metal archives, they're from north carolina. regardless, they certainly have the same ferocious spirit.

copies of this demo can be found on discogs so pick it up if you like what you hear - it's short but sweet.

tour dates are in the above poster and individual show fliers can be found on the crepusculo negro blog. those of you in the oakland/san francisco area are in for a treat as lycus and fell voices are both joining in on the action. and salem, oregon...well, that festival just looks unbelievable. most dates have a local or semi-local opening act, so don't miss this tour when it rolls through your town.

at first glance, this post breaks the primary self-imposed rule in my so-called book - it's readily available all over the internet, so it's in no way unique.

or so you might think.

but this is a rip of the dismal cursings pro-tape press from 2012 and it sounds, compared to the other rip circulating, like a completely different album.

crepusculo negro isn't known for their recording (nor dubbing) quality, and their original version of this tape is mixed so poorly and covered in such thick static that it's barely listenable.

then dismal cursings came along and released their own version for europe featuring "improved" sound and it really is a substantial improvement. obviously, this basement recording hasn't been transformed into some over-polished studio garbage, but it certainly sounds a hell of a lot better than before. more importantly, it's a hell of a lot more pleasant to listen to and thus much more enjoyable.

while I certainly don't think this album was crepusculo negro's highpoint - that honor belongs to either arizmenda tape and/or the ashdautas split with bone awl - it's arguably their most important and well-known, which makes it an essential listen. and it's never sounded better.

on a side note, I certainly do NOT condone crepusculo negro's actions with regard to their mailorder policies and personal lives, and if those two things are enough to turn you off the label, well, I don't blame you. but this is, nevertheless, an important album in the modern USBM scene, so everyone should at least have the option to check it out.

I believe this version is still available straight from the label, but they're in belgium so shipping might break the bank for anyone in the US. they also have copies their version of the second arizmenda tape that also features "improved" sound, and I think I read somewhere that they have cassette versions of the first three portal albums in the works, as well as elysian blaze's "blood geometry," so definitely keep an eye out for those in the (near?) future.

there are also two copies for sale on discogs, so do your best to pick this one up in its most listenable form.


UPDATE: mike from fallen empire has informed me that he's got copies of this one in stock. so now you really have no excuse not to pick it up.
