carved cross - rehearsal december mmxv.

Carved Cross - Rehearsal December MMXV

exactly the type of filthy, raw, disgusting darkness that we've all come to expect from sam vince's carved cross project.

totally unapologetic, blackened doom brutality.

although this is a rehearsal recording, I actually really like the mix here...vocals are at the forefront, and as much as I love that untitled triple cassette release, those vocals are too buried...but this one, it's just great.

very reminiscent of the split with phantom feel that I posted a while back.

copies were included with the most recent down and out zine, and each copy is personalized with its recipient's name...needless to say, the odds of tracking one down are pretty slim.

enjoy it, because this is a great release that's a strong contender to be one of the best tapes of the year.

3. Persiste

as one might surmise by the tags at the bottom of this post, I had a difficult time choosing a genre for this new release from noctívago, courtesy of fallow field.

the music is pretty funereal, but the vocals are pretty post-punk-y, and then there's a lengthy ambient ending.

it's all very melancholic and covered in a dark haze.

certainly an interesting release, as is the case with everything that fallow field puts out, and definitely worth your time.

all of the new fallow field releases (expectedly) sold out, so keep an eye on discogs.

street sects - sonja.

Street Sects - Sonja

2:27

dir. Leo Ashline

it is my distinct pleasure to premiere the first music video from austin's street sects.

I've been a long-time supporter of the band and although things have been quiet for a while, it was a great surprise to learn that leo ashline and shaun ringsmuth have been hard at work on both new music and this video.

this new track isn't nearly as caustic as their earlier material, but there's no loss of emotion - if anything, the change in tone highlights a new emotional depth and maturity absent in their earlier (though still excellent) work.

according to leo, the footage was shot, "about a month after I got out of rehab while I was living in a halfway house," and creating the video was a truly cathartic experience that helped him face his past and move into the future with a newfound sense of forgiveness.

while leo openly admits that the video is, "a bit rough around the edges," it's obvious that everything about the clip is intensely personal and I couldn't be more excited about what the future holds for street sects, both as people and as musicians.

without further ado, check out the video embedded below, and then stop by the street sects bandcamp to grab some music, physical or digital.

another collection of epic walls from the ebony tower, this time exploring haruki murakami's science-fiction novel of the same name.

I haven't read the source material, but these walls and the plot summary have me incredibly intrigued...definitely one to add to my ever-increasing reading list.

copies may still be available from the artist himself, so feel free to ask.

better late than never - three years of metallic imagery.

this year has been (relatively) light on posts, but nonetheless it's been really incredible.

I've had the honor of working with some of the most talented, passionate people across the extreme music and video art worlds.

curating josh graham's debut solo show, debuting a short film by david hall with not one but two live performances from mick barr, filming portal and agoraphobic nosebleed at maryland deathfest, debuting some of my own video art at venues around the world...I can't believe it's all happened within the past year.

yes, this blog has suffered a little bit...and the fact that so much is on bandcamp now, including almost every total black release, has made it a little more challenging to find material to present here. but regardless, metallic imagery will soldier on.

thanks to all of you for your continued support.

I'll hopefully have an announcement about a gallery exhibition in which I'm participating in the next month or so, featuring original music from an artist with whom most of you are probably already familiar...but more on that will come at a later date.

my skills are available for live concert visuals, so if anyone out there is interested, feel free to shoot me an email.

this has been a challenging yet rewarding year, and I can't wait to see what the next twelve months bring...so, once again, thank you all for your support.

I couldn't do it without you.

1. The Sound Of Them Forming
2. Sometimes I Am Wakened
3. A Constant Murmured Shout
4. Not There

I picked this up a few weeks ago when richard ramirez and the rita played silent barn in brooklyn.

sean matzus put on a solid performance under his a week of kindness monicker...granted, the rita went on twenty minutes later with the kind of performance that just obliterates all others, but matzus offers some nice, contemplative noisy drones that you all should be able to appreciate.

be sure to check out matzus' and unlimited drift's discographies - both have plenty of excellent material.

I don't think this is available online yet, but keep an eye on deadline recordings.

honestly, I don't know how many more platitudes I can bestow upon total black...there's not much left to say at this point.

there's a wide range of artists and styles featured on this release, and the packaging is great, as expected...very clean and minimal, which I always enjoy.

brett's in the process of moving right now, so the total black store is down for the time being...if you can't wait, a copy or two are available on discogs, but of course I'd rather you all order straight from the source.

trips.

TRIPS

September 3rd - 25th

Opening: 9/3, 6-9pm

Made in NY Media Center
30 John Street
Brooklyn, NY 11201

so...I've been dabbling in the digital art world by creating various video installations over the past year or so, and I'm happy to finally have my work in a group show that's debuting on thursday.

normally I wouldn't necessarily share something like this here, but a) I'm really proud of this work; b) it's the first time my work has been part of a legitimate exhibition; and c) I was lucky enough to have some of my favorite musicians contribute music to score my two pieces.

the first piece, "intersecting journeys," is composed of stock timelapse footage that I colored, edited, and digitally manipulated.

it was designed as a three-channel installation and features a track from damien master's purple light side project as the score.

my second piece in the show, "infinity crashing," is made up of footage that I shot, edited, colored, manipulated, and arranged.

it was also designed as a three-channel installation but could easily be configured for different display options.

and zen from cremation lily was gracious enough to give me permission to use "conquering heat," from his latest collaboration with false moniker, to score the piece.

I couldn't be happier with how these two pieces turned out. I shot some test footage for a new project this past weekend and I can't wait to dive into that next.

and while those embedded clips are in fact the full videos, they're mere approximations compared to seeing them in person displayed across twenty-seven HD monitors.

the whole show was curated by leo kuelbs and the other artists involved in the show are really special, too - one is actually a noise artist from hungary whose video is definitely the closest visual approximation to aural noise that I've ever seen.

another artist, ryan uzilevsky, designed and installed the projection system at the facility where I work...this guy travels all over the world doing absolutely astounding projection mapping installations and never disappoints.

plus, there's free wine and beer at the opening on thursday, from 6-9p.

stop by, check out the pieces, and say hello.

and I'd like to extend one final "thank you" to zen and damien for letting me use their music - you guys are the best.

feel free to leave any questions in the comments.

7. (A)Sex - Glistening Blood Drops Against My Pale Skin

in honor of the excellent (a)sex performance last night, here's a split from (a)sex, the man behind the ebony tower, and RDCD, the man behind phantom cadaver.

not only is mitchell of (a)sex a captivating performer, his recorded output is just as dynamic, and he's also become incredibly prolific in a very short amount of time.

his wall material is consistently challenging and thought-provoking, and his power electronics material is consistently brutal and cathartic.

and the same can be said of john's RDCD material.

lots of great tones, textures, and vocals in this one.

I'm not sure how many copies of this disc were made, but it's seriously excellent and should provide a great starting point for anyone unfamiliar with either (a)sex or RDCD.

a few other (a)sex releases are available via bandcamp - they're all affordable, so please support this hardworking artist who also just happens to be a really nice guy.

and there's plenty of RDCD material available on bandcamp, too.

if you have the chance to see (a)sex live, do whatever you can to bear witness to mitchell's special brand of concentrated fury.

4. The Water Of The Forest Is Happy
5. Dreaming Of The Deep
6. Interlude
7. All The Pretty Horses

this new book of sand tape comes courtesy of mouthbreather records and it's easily one of the strangest black metal recordings I've heard in a while.

it's all very...delirious.

child-like melodies from myriad instruments merge and digress over and over again throughout this collection of tracks.

the blast beats and shrieked vocals only serve to underscore the utterly divergent, at times alien, nature of these compositions.

don't get me wrong, it's unmistakably bleak and black...but definitely unlike anything I've heard in a long time, if not ever.

the book of sand site even describes it as "alternate dimension symphonic black metal," and I couldn't think of anything more apt.

highly recommended.

because as low as this recording quality is, I can listen to it.

I can discern the instruments and the vocals underneath the murk.

that's a good thing.

but this is exactly what I expect from fallow field.

good range of tempos, solid riffs, shrieked vocals...what more could anyone want?

1. Fullmoon Over My Castle

let me just get this out there now - this has got to be one of the worst-sounding, most poorly recorded tapes I've ever heard.

some of you will probably love this and claim all black metal should sound this terrible.

to each his own.

but to me this is, like, borderline unlistenable.

it's possible - nay, probable - that there's some good stuff here, but the entire low end is just static. and not in the same way as most lo-fi, homemade black metal - this sounds like something was legitimately wrong with the recording hardware.

while it was once available through down and out, I haven't seen this tape for sale anywhere else.

and without an entry on discogs, you'll just have to keep an eye on the usual message boards.

physically, this is a well-made, well-designed release...I just really wish the recording was better.

here's hoping for more next time.

this huge boxset retrospective collects several sophia albums in one place - sigillvm militvm, herbstwerk, aus der welt, seduction of madness, death, dumb and blind, and spite are all contained within.

it's all very industrial, layered with synths, ambience, and chanting.

incredibly cinematic stuff, to be honest.

*note: I fixed a typo and somehow this got moved to the front page. don't ask me why. otherwise it's the same as the original from a few months ago...

as total black's first vinyl release, I couldn't think of anyone or anything more fitting than a new release from the rita.

featuring source recordings taken from ballet dancers' shoes, sam mckinlay has created his most cohesive, hypnotic work yet, and I just love it.

there are so many great textures here, it's great to see his work continue to evolve. mckinlay could've easily grown complacent and chosen to churn out generic wall after generic wall, but he doesn't. there's real care and craftsmanship put into this record and it shows.

the same goes for brett over at total black - he put so much thought and detail into making this record a reality, above and beyond the call of duty. great design and great supplemental materials - posters, full-color booklets, everything here coalesces into the perfect example of why he runs the best noise label around.

I don't know how, but copies are still available directly from the source.

so...this is a big one: a twenty-disc box set from richard ramirez's werewolf jerusalem project.

it was not cheap, nor is it easy to get through, as each of these discs could be an album in and of itself.

this collection is dense, almost impenetrably so, but that's probably the point....much like the off-limits city for which it's been named, the journey feels...

dangerous,

perilous,

like trekking through toxic lands,

like breathing poisonous air.

the whole thing was manufactured specifically for the number of pre-orders that were taken, and each set is numbered and signed by ramirez.

originally released by profound lore a few months ago on compact disc and vinyl, this is a rip of the cassette version from tour de garde.

I don't know why it's not up on the profound lore bandcamp page, but this is some genuinely first-rate black metal and I couldn't be more excited to share it with all of you.

the debut full-length from A.M.S.G. was one of my favorite releases of 2013. this tape does away with a lot of the more experimental aspects of that record in favor of a more traditional sound, but that's not a problem when it sounds this good.

lots of great atmosphere, memorable riffs, and decrepit vocals.

buy copies for yourselves from the link below, and also pick up the (mostly) excellent new akitsa album...plus whatever else you want from tour de garde's freshly revamped web store - there's a ton of great items available.

highly recommended, but that shouldn't be surprising.

1. Drop Out
2. Trapped Inside My Head
3. Crawl
4. On The Street
5. Falling Down (Instrumental)
6. Crippled Over (Instrumental)

this came with the may issue of down & out, but only if you ordered it after receiving the april issue...or was it the march issue?

I don't remember and I don't have any issues in front of me right now...

either way, copies of this are probably unavailable now but fixation has an EP coming out in the near future.

the may issue of down & out features an in-depth interview conducted between the always-entertaining jon rosenthal and the band (more specifically...sam vince?), and it's an interesting discussion about the band's move from a raw black metal sound to mixture of black metal and hardcore.

and although I'm generally not much of a hardcore fan, there's more than enough black metal in here to grab my attention and hold it for the tape's duration.

really, this is some ferocious material and my interest is definitely piqued for the (hopefully) imminent EP release.

(more than good enough to share.)
