bleak environment is back. what more needs to be said?

I've shared a couple of their releases in the past and was definitely disappointed when it was announced that they'd be shuttering operations for the foreseeable future.

but about three weeks ago, a slew of new releases went up, including this, bleak environment's first compilation.

and I'm proud to be able to share it with all of you.

spread across two cassettes packaged in a white clamshell case with the trademark black-and-white photocopied artwork, there couldn't be a better mission statement for the relaunch of this impeccable label than this exemplary compilation of new artists.

of course, the fifty copies sold out in a matter of hours.

tracks range from noisy techno to noisy black metal to just plain old noise and I highly recommend everything on here - do what you can to track down a copy. trust me, you won't regret it.

in addition to new releases from xothist, tollund men, and others, there's also a slew of records and tapes from all of the best labels across the underground. so if you weren't lucky enough to grab one of the 50 copies of eden in reeds, at least pick up a distro item to show your support for bleak environment's relaunch.

and one of the relaunch releases, "vessels of wrath" by leopard in a tree, is still available. buy it now.

trepaneringsritualen & sutekh hexen - one hundred year storm.

Trepaneringsritualen & Sutekh Hexen - One Hundred Year Storm

late last year, at what may prove to have been its final incarnation, trepaneringsritualen and sutekh hexen performed a collaborative set at the stella natura festival.

this epic, hour-long performance was recorded and has been released to both cassette and vinyl by pesanta urfolk, in collaboration with cloister recordings. I can't speak to the vinyl edition, but the cassette version features gorgeous, well-designed packaging, pro-printed cassettes and great sound quality for a live recording.

the music itself is very tribal, very ritualistic - definitely the vibe they were going for at a festival held in the forests of northern california. and it's also very clearly a combination of the two acts involved - the dark ambient of trepaneringsritualen is usually dominant, yet punctuated at the perfect moments by sutekh hexen's unique brand of black noise.

fans of either of these artists have probably already picked this recording up on at least one format, but in case you haven't, copies of both the cassette and standard black vinyl are still available from pesanta urfolk, so don't miss out on this fantastically-packaged recording of a landmark, one-time-only performance.

Fresh Water Girls / Herukrat

1. Fresh Water Girls - Terracotta Lake Floor
2. Herukrat - Jerusalem
3. Herukrat - Military Occupancy

I'm sure you're all familiar with herukrat, but fresh water girls was brand new to me when I picked this one up from total black after brett's last update.

the fresh water girls side of this split definitely leans toward the more sparse side of the spectrum for the first half of the track before growing progressively more caustic. the opposite side finds herukrat predictably harsh and cathartic in all the best ways, with lots of distorted dialogue samples and twisted, churning electronics.

keep an eye on discogs if you're interested in picking up a copy, as it seems to be sold out everywhere. and if anyone has any other fresh water girls material, I'd love to check it out.

15. Arizmenda - Rites Of Deconsecration
16. Axeman - Ride Into The Night

ever since the tour edition of this epic compilation came out last year, there's been a rip floating around. I don't know if it was the poor dub job or the fact that the ripper's cassette deck (probably) sucks, but that rip sounds like garbage.

this is a rip of the newly-released pro-tape version and, to be frank, it's a massive improvement over what's already out there. you shouldn't have to rip something multiple times, you shouldn't have to do any editing or use any filters. this rip, as with all of my others, is straight off the deck, no tweaks, no attempts at "improving" the sound quality. and you know what? this sounds pretty fantastic.

so, finally, justice has been done to crepusculo negro's crowning achievement. at nearly two hours, this is a lot to digest. this version comes in a clear plastic case with the same twenty-page, black and white booklet as the previous version. it's got lyrics and imagery that compliment the music perfectly.

overall it's a very well-curated release and easily ranks up there with the masterwork that was the svn okklt compilation as one of the best I've heard in a long time.

it's sold out from the source, but maybe they'll do a second pressing soon. and I hear that people are actually receiving orders in a timely manner nowadays, so don't be too afraid that your money will disappear into a black hole.

here's yet another project from george proctor of legion blotan, this time joined by his brother, frederick. this is their second release under the rimethurses monicker, the first being another demo released in 2012.

and, honestly, I don't know how to describe the music here...it has several of the components of black metal, but it's definitely not black metal...at least, I don't think it is...really, I'm at a loss for words.

the description on the legion blotan site describes this as "broken black metal," and you know, that's pretty apt. the pieces are all here, they're just put together in a very different, very unexpected way.

so check it out and judge for yourself, and if you like it, pick up a copy below along with a few other legion blotan releases while you're at it.

Caligula031 - Bachelorette Party

1. Bachelorette
2. What's A CFNM Shoot Like, Ladies?
3. CFNM
4. Rookies In Training

after their split with the rita last year, I was really looking forward to some new brutality from italy's caligula031, and this solo tape more than satisfies.

released by institute of paraphilia studies, a subsidiary of freak animal, this one comes in a soft case, not unlike the one that housed the yellow eyes / monument split from a while back. there's also a wraparound insert with lyrics, should you want to follow along with the madness.

the music itself is pure destruction - harsh tones, harsh textures, and even harsher vocals make this a release any power electronics fan would be proud to add to his or her collection.

copies are available from (surprise, surprise) total black and analog worship - but don't wait long, as both of those sources always sell out quickly.
