book of sand - the face of the deep.

Book Of Sand - The Face Of The Deep

45:47

86.8 MB

1. Intro - To Live Forever
2. I Can Stand Right Here, See My Face On The Other Side
3. Swimming Through Water, Swimming Through Blood
4. The Water Of The Forest Is Happy
5. Dreaming Of The Deep
6. Interlude
7. All The Pretty Horses

this new book of sand tape comes courtesy of mouthbreather records and it's easily one of the strangest black metal recordings I've heard in a while.

it's all very...delirious.

child-like melodies from myriad instruments merge and digress over and over again throughout this collection of tracks.

the blast beats and shrieked vocals only serve to underscore the utterly divergent, at times alien, nature of these compositions.

don't get me wrong, it's unmistakably bleak and black...but definitely unlike anything I've heard in a long time, if not ever.

the book of sand site even describes it as "alternate dimension symphonic black metal," and I couldn't think of anything more apt.

highly recommended.

cremation lily - a body of one's own.

Cremation Lily - A Body Of One's Own

29:49

56.07 MB

1. Dancing In Expanding Rings
2. With Upraised Arms

a throwback to when cremation lily dealt exclusively in brutal analog harsh noise.

ah, those were simpler times.

but zen's work is fantastic, both new and old, and he obviously deserves your support.

this one is no longer available, but he does have represses of some older cremation lily titles for sale at the strange rules store and they're all excellent.

support him and all of the other artists on the strange rules roster.

his catalogue is one of the most well-designed and well-curated in the world.

gidim - two.

Gidim - II

13:47

26.38 MB

1. The Blind
2. Chthonic Dream
3. The Way

see, now this is lo-fi black metal that I can get behind.

because as low as this recording quality is, I can listen to it.

I can discern the instruments and the vocals underneath the murk.

that's a good thing.

but this is exactly what I expect from fallow field.

good range of tempos, solid riffs, shrieked vocals...what more could anyone want?

this tape, along with the rest of the latest batch, are all sold out...but maybe a distro or two will have copies, who knows.

worth tracking down if you can find it.

recommended.

(the good kind of lo-fi.)

Dark Worship - Fullmoon Over My Castle

1. Fullmoon Over My Castle
2. We Are The Whispers Of Satan
3. Funeral Of A World
4. Dark Worship

let me just get this out there now - this has got to be one of the worst-sounding, most poorly recorded tapes I've ever heard.

some of you will probably love this and claim all black metal should sound this terrible.

to each his own.

but to me this is, like, borderline unlistenable.

it's possible - nay, probable - that there's some good stuff here, but the entire low end is just static. and not in the same way as most lo-fi, homemade black metal - this sounds like something was legitimately wrong with the recording hardware.

while it was once available through down and out, I haven't seen this tape for sale anywhere else.

and without an entry on discogs, you'll just have to keep an eye on the usual message boards.

physically, this is a well-made, well-designed release...I just really wish the recording was better.

here's hoping for more next time.

(you've been warned.)

new compilation/remix album from british power electronics act mlehst, courtesy of new forces.

great packaging and even better content.

honestly, not a whole lot to say other than that this comes highly recommended.

my copy came courtesy of unseen force, whose store has since gone down and recently been resurrected, albeit with a fraction of the original content.

sample other new forces releases at their bandcamp page, and send them an email if you're interested in ordering...which you should be, because all of their releases are fantastic.

a few copies are also for sale on discogs.

don't miss this one.
